The Montana/Dakotas BLM is seeking to fill a Park Ranger (River Patrol) position located in the Western Montana District Office, Dillon Field Office, Division of Nonrenewable Resources, Duty Station: Ennis, Montana. Information about the Ennis area can be found at Ennis Chamber of Commerce.

Requirements

Note: This is not a law enforcement position.
IMPORTANT: Park Rangers (River Patrol) must be able to row a raft in whitewater rapids rated on the International Scale from Class III to IV; swim in swift water to perform rescues; raft to remote recreation sites; and operate an oar powered raft in up to Class IV white water rapids on the International Scale.
Selective Placement Factors: This position requires special qualifications that have been determined to be essential to perform the duties and will be used as a screen out element. Those who do not provide evidence they possess the following selective factor(s) will be rated not qualified:
1. You MUST have skill and expertise to safely row a 13 to 15-foot raft in whitewater rapids rated on the International Scale up to Class IV. Be sure to include this information on your resume along with the river(s) you safely navigated the 13 to 15-foot raft AND the amount of time spent performing these activities.
2. You MUST have training and/or experience in whitewater rescue techniques to include swift water swimming, recognition of swift water hazards, knowledge of shallow and deep water crossings, and rescue problems.
In addition to the selective placement factors, your resume must contain enough information to show that you meet the qualification requirements as defined in the announcement or vacancy questions. Your responses to the questions must be adequately reflected in your resume.
For GS-7: You must possess one (1) year of specialized work experience at or equivalent to GS-6 level that is similar in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: Your experience must include navigating a raft through Class III-IV whitewater rapids. Specialized experience may include experience as park guide or tour leader; archaeological or historical preservation research work; forestry and/or fire management work in a park, recreation or conservation area; management, assistant, or program specialist work involving the development and implementation of policy related to protection, conservation, or management of park areas or similar operations; planning day to day operation of a recreation area providing such facilities as camping, water sports, picnic areas, or coordinating routine activities with maintenance personnel; advising visitors concerning safety, fire prevention, and proper and authorized uses of recreational facilities. -OR- Education: successful completion of one (1) full academic year (45 quarter or 30 semester hours) of graduate education related to the occupation (see related course work below). -OR- meet the requirements of Superior Academic Achievement (S.A.A.). See OPM Qualifications Standard-General Policies E(4)(f); -OR- Combination of Education and Experience: you may meet qualification requirements for this position by combining specialized experience and appropriate graduate education.
Related Course Work - natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archaeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science related to the protection of public lands, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. Course work in fields other than those specified may be accepted if it clearly provides applicants with the background of knowledge and skills necessary for successful job performance in the position.
Specialized Experience: Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade level of the position to be filled.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Physical Demands and Work Environment: The work is performed outdoors in rivers with up to Class IV rated white water rapids, and on rugged terrain to include very steep, wet, muddy, rough, uneven or rocky surfaces; positions require physical exertions, such as, bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities. Individuals should be capable of working alone, or with other people, during early morning hours, night, or during the day.

Position is career seasonal. You will be in pay status for at least 6 months; but less than 12 months in a calendar year. When work/funds are unavailable you will be placed in non-pay status. May work less than 6 months upon initial appointment.
