Job Summary
We are currently seeking an experienced and dependable Rock Climbing Instructor for the Community Center climbing wall programs. Instructors need to be mature, knowledgeable, skilled, motivated, and dynamic individuals that enjoy teaching rock climbing to primarily new and inexperienced youth and adult climbers. Climbing wall programs include instructional classes, day camps, drop-in belay sessions, belay tests, and rental groups. This position reports directly to the Program Coordinator.
The CRAG is 33 feet tall and sculpted to look and feel like Index granite. The wall offers three, top-rope climbing routes with varying degrees of difficulty and a bouldering wall.
Rock climbing, belay, and instructing experience required.
HOURS: 15-20 hours/week
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Represent the City in a positive manner and provide exceptional customer service.
- Create excitement about the climbing wall among program participants.
- Provide safe and quality climbing wall experiences to participants in day camps.
- Assist in the design and development of rock climbing camp curriculum.
- Supervise, train, and evaluate rock climbing instructors
- Instruct skills in day camps.
- Enforce climbing wall policies and procedures at all times.
- Monitor wall safety practices; remedy or report unsafe practices or conditions immediately.
- Respond to emergency situations and provide first aid when needed; report emergencies to manager.
- Perform general custodial and maintenance functions, including creating new climbing routes, as necessary.
- Prepare, maintain, and submit all program, emergency, and inspection reports to the manager, as assigned and required.
- Attend trainings and staff meetings, as requested by manager.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Must have adequate indoor and outdoor rock climbing experience as documented in a 'climbing resume'.
- Able to provide exceptional customer service.
- Able to demonstrate proper use of climbing equipment in a competent and confident manner.
- Able to give clear, precise instructions and demonstrations.
- Possess personal climbing gear and equipment.
- Capable of comfortably top roping 5.9 on an artificial climbing wall.
- Possess current First Aid/CPR certification or be willing to obtain prior to employment.
- Must pass a defensive driving course.
- Candidate must pass criminal background check prior to being hired.

- Will be subject to working at heights up to 33 feet.
- Work involves walking, talking, hearing, using hands to handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. Vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
- The employee may be required to push, pull, lift, and/or carry up to 10 pounds.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately quiet.
- Able to perform duties involving physical labor; such as bending, kneeling, standing, reaching, climbing, stooping, squatting, pushing, and twisting.
- Ability to assist during emergency situations.

This is a Variable, non-exempt, non-union position.
Definition of a Variable Employee:
- Average weekly hours cannot be determined at date of hire.
- Hours may vary from week to week and are anticipated to be 28 hours per week or less.
- NOTE: Will be considered full-time and eligible for medical coverage if hours average 30 hours per week or more over a 12-month measurement period (or 130 hours per month).
