Job Description: Ocean paddleboarding instructors lead groups of 1 to 6 people through an “Introduction to Standup Paddling” class departing from New Brighton State Beach. The instructor teaches participants all aspects of stand up paddling, though this class also focuses on the special requirement of learning to paddle on the ocean. Those special requirements include learning how to safely beach launch and exit, being aware of wind and swell considerations, paddling in chop, etc. The instructor prepares the equipment for the class, teaches some on land instruction, helps participants safely launch through any beach break, then the majority of the class is on the water. At the end of the class, the instructor helps the class safely exit the water and returns to the boards to the on-site storage area. Most “Intro to Ocean Paddling” classes are pre-scheduled, allowing us to offer the class dates out to all our instructors well in advance. Since we have multiple instructors, instructors can accept those class dates they are available for and pass on those they are not. In addition, we get frequent, short notice (generally 2-7 days) requests for private lessons (normally one to four people only) — in those cases we notify all instructors and the class is given to the first instructor to accept it. Ocean classes (because they are pre-scheduled group classes or requests for private lessons) are generally Saturday or Sunday mornings, with some additional requests on weekday mornings. Instructors accept classes as they are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. This is a contractor position, paid on an hourly job basis. Pay is dependent upon experience. Prerequisites: Applicants must have strong paddleboarding experience. Applicants must have good safety ocean experience, awareness and understanding as these classes are on the ocean rather than in a harbor. While you will not be teaching surfing, surfing experience is a plus as it lends itself to an excellent understanding of ocean conditions, safety and awareness. In addition, we do get the occasional SUP surfing lesson request, which we teach only on a one-on- one basis. If you have strong surf experience, you would be eligible to lead those classes as well. The instructor is responsible for the safety and enjoyment of the class participants for their on-water experience. Applicants must have their own vehicle or transportation to New Brighton (although private classes may not always be at New Brighton which means gear will need to be transported by the instructor the the location of the lesson).
